Riaan Van Der Merwe

b. 1976

Riaan was taught painting, sculpting and drawing by his grandmother Ellen Botha, who schooled him in the style of the old masters.

He is influenced by I by Caravaggio, Renoir and Van Gogh, and is well known for his portraits. Riaan has painted large 2 meter canvases of faces which draw attention. He applies paint in an impasto style with knife, brush or even using his hands.

His work is highly acclaimed and he has been awarded prizes for his portraits.
